Visit SB Nation's Fear the Sword and The Dream Shake.

Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Aaron Brooks tallied 27 points and six assists and Trevor Ariza added 26 points, as Houston handled the Cavaliers, 95-85, at Toyota Center.

Carl Landry and Shane Battier chipped in 14 points apiece for the Rockets, who have won four of their last five. Houston converted 20 Cleveland turnovers into 22 points to come away victorious.

LeBron James ended with 27 points on 8-of-21 shooting, adding seven assists and six boards for the Cavs, who were coming off a 111-109 overtime loss at Memphis on Tuesday. Delonte West ended with 14 points in defeat.

Houston blew open a three-point lead late in the first quarter during a seemingly innocuous four-possession stretch. Brooks' three-point play sparked the 12-0 run, Ariza hit two from downtown, and Landry cleaned up an Ariza miss with a layup while being fouled.

Landry's free throw made it 29-14 with under two minutes remaining in the stanza, and Houston led 33-19 going to the second.

Houston continued to lead by double digits throughout the second and took a 52-39 edge to the locker room. It was the same story in the third, but the Cavs trailed just 68-58 with a quarter to play.

Cleveland pulled as close as five, 71-66, after two James free throws 2 1/2 minutes into the fourth, but Houston's subsequent 10-2 run, which Ariza started with a jumper, pushed the margin back to double-digits.

The Cavs never pulled within two possessions the rest of the way.

Houston has won four of the last five meetings with Cleveland, which is winless in its last four visits to Toyota Center...Luis Scola grabbed 10 rebounds for Houston...Anderson Varejao logged 10 points for the Cavs, who received a seven-point, 10-rebound effort from Shaquille O'Neal.

Visit SB Nation's Golden State of Mind for more on Warriors basketball.

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Monta Ellis and CJ Watson each poured in 18 points as Golden State capitalized off numerous New Jersey turnovers for a 105-89 victory over the Nets.

Mikki Moore finished with 16 points and seven rebounds for Golden State, which used just eight players, but managed to convert 22 New Jersey turnovers into 30 points. That helped the Warriors snap a four-game skid.

"We know they're kind of struggling as a team and we just tried to take advantage down low and on fast breaks," said Watson. "That's what we did tonight. We came through pretty big, especially in the clutch when they cut it to five or six, we came up with some big baskets and big stops."

Brook Lopez tallied 21 points and 10 rebounds for the Nets, who were coming off just their second win of the season, 103-101 at Chicago on Tuesday. Devin Harris ended with 19 points and Courtney Lee 15 for the Nets, who dropped to 2-20.

"We made a lot of mental mistakes tonight," said Harris. "We talked about what they do well...create turnovers. They score off the turnovers and they're a fast break team. We were a little bit careless with the ball and that led to uncontested layups."

Watson and the Warriors dominated the second quarter. He had 15 points in the period and the visitors shot 16-of-24 during the stanza, while outscoring New Jersey, 38-21. That allowed Golden State to build a 58-48 cushion and the Warriors were in front the rest of the night.

Golden State's lead reached as high as 20 in the third before the Nets cut it to 81-70 moving to the fourth. A Chris Douglas-Roberts dunk with 6:35 remaining had New Jersey within 90-85, but Ellis converted a pair of buckets and the Warriors pulled away down the stretch.

The Nets built their lead to 26-15 in the opening quarter, but Golden State closed to 27-20 after 12 minutes. The tide turned in the second and a layup from Watson built Golden State's lead to 54-44 with 1:25 left before intermission.

The Warriors moved to 1-1 on a five-game road trip, which will continue Friday at Chicago. They are on the trip minus coach Don Nelson, who is out with pneumonia...The Nets play at Indiana Friday to start a three-game road swing...Golden State has won four straight against the Nets...Stephen Curry had 14 points, while Corey Maggette chipped in 13 with nine boards for Golden State...New Jersey was 1-of-10 from three-point range.

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Rodney Stuckey scored 10 of his 27 points in the fourth quarter and hit the go-ahead basket with 8.7 seconds left in regulation, as the Pistons handed the Philadelphia 76ers their 11th straight defeat, 90-86.

Stuckey also had eight assists, while Jonas Jerebko donated 17 points and 10 rebounds for Detroit, which has won four of five and snapped a five-game skid on the road.

Jason Maxiell added 12 points, while Kwame Brown and Charlie Villanueva each scored 11 for the victors.

Andre Iguodala logged 18 points, nine helpers and six boards but missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer in the waning seconds for the Sixers, who at 5-17 own the second worst winning percentage (.227) in the Eastern Conference.

Allen Iverson, in his second game back in Philadelphia, ended with 11 points, while Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert each had 17 points in another losing cause.

There were four ties and five lead changes in the final 12 minutes.

Chucky Atkins broke an 84-84 tie by making two free throws with 1:20 left. Iverson tied it with a mid-range jumper from the left wing, and a shot clock violation gave the Sixers the ball back with 40 seconds left.

Iguodala failed to get his contested runner to fall, and Dalembert's tip-in fell short as well. Stuckey got tied up by Iguodala at the other end but managed to pick up a loose ball and hit a fadeaway shot with 8.7 seconds remaining.

Iguodala had a chance for the lead, but his wide open three-point try from the right wing hit off the back of the rim, and Detroit held on.

An offense-starved first quarter ended with the Pistons holding an 18-16 lead, and by halftime it was tied at 42.

An 8-0 Detroit run midway through the third helped the visitors take a 67-63 lead into the a tight fourth quarter.

Philadelphia will finish up its five-game homestand against Houston, Golden State and Cleveland...Sixers rookie guard Jrue Holiday missed his third straight game due to a strained right rotator cuff...Pistons guard Ben Gordon sat out due to a sprained left ankle...The Pistons next play on Thursday against Denver at the Palace of Auburn Hills...Dalembert also had 11 rebounds, while Ben Wallace finished with a game-high 12 rebounds for the Pistons, who won the battle on the glass, 45-32.

Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Brandon Roy totaled 29 points on 11-of-21 shooting and added seven rebounds and five assists, as the injury-plagued Trail Blazers pulled out a 102-91 victory against the Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.

LaMarcus Aldridge posted 20 and eight rebounds, and Andre Miller scored 15 for Portland, which had lost four of its last five games. Joel Przybilla started and saw extended minutes at center in place of Greg Oden and ended with 12 points and eight boards.

Since taking an exciting 90-89 victory from Houston on Saturday, Portland has lost Oden to season-ending surgery to repair a fracture in his left patella and guard Rudy Fernandez for the next 4-to-6 weeks following lower back surgery.

Making matters worse, head coach Nate McMillan underwent surgery this week to correct a ruptured right Achilles' tendon suffered during practice. He did not accompany the team for its current four-game Eastern Conference road swing.

Dahntay Jones had 19 points and Tyler Hansbrough scored 13 with 11 rebounds for Indiana, which is not without injury problems of its own.

The Pacers, losers of six straight and 10 of their last 11 overall, learned Tuesday they will be without leading scorer Danny Granger for at least a month due to a torn plantar fascia in his right foot.

Portland jumped out to a 26-19 lead after the opening 12 minutes and maintained a seven-point advantage at halftime, 52-45.

The Pacers kept things close in the third and got to within three, 58-55, on a short jumper from Jones with 6 1/2 minutes left.

Jeff Foster's layup made it a 61-59 deficit close to five minutes remaining, but the Blazers wouldn't relinquish the lead and opened up a seven-point margin on Miller's three-pointer with 1:20 left on the clock.

Indiana, though, rallied to within two heading to the fourth with a pair of baskets from A.J. Price and Hansbrough making it a 77-75 affair.

Troy Murphy's three-pointer moments into the final period got Indiana within one and the hosts drew even for the first time since the game's opening minutes on back-to-back Luther Head jumpers with 7:41 to play.

Roy, though, helped keep the Blazers in front by pouring in six straight points for the visitors, and a Steve Blake three dropped for a 92-85 lead with five minutes to go.

Roy scored consecutive baskets a short time later, with his layup providing a 96-89 advantage inside 2 1/2 minutes remaining. Miller then buried a pair of shots around a T.J. Ford make for a 100-91 margin winding under a minute left to help assure the win.

The Blazers will also visit the Cavaliers and Bucks on their current swing...Assistant coach Dean Demopoulos is filling in for McMillan...The Pacers will host New Jersey on Friday to conclude a brief two-game homestand...Head notched nine points while Ford and Brandon Rush scored eight apiece for Indiana, which shot just 3-of-17 (17.6 percent) from beyond the arc and 41.3 percent from the field...Portland hit 6-of-16 three-pointers and shot 49.4 percent from the floor...Portland won both matchups with Indiana a season ago, but the Blazers have lost six of the last nine visits to Conseco Fieldhouse.

For more on the soaring Hawks and the slumping Bulls, visit SB Nation's Peachtree Hoops and Blog-a-Bull, respectively.

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Jamal Crawford scored 29 points to lead the Atlanta Hawks in a 118-83 blowout of the Chicago Bulls.

Maurice Evans added 18 points, also in a reserve role, for the Hawks, winners in their last two games. Josh Smith scored 18 and pulled down seven rebounds for Atlanta, which beat the Bulls for a fifth straight time. Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams each scored 12 in the victory.

"Our job is to bring energy. The first unit did such a good job," said Crawford. "We just have to come in and either sustain it or provide a lift. We had some good momentum going into halftime and we wanted to come out with the same enthusiasm and hopefully come out with a win."

Derrick Rose tallied 19 points, James Johnson added 17 and John Salmons 16 for the Bulls, who suffered their fourth straight loss and were beaten for the ninth time in the last 10 contests. They've lost seven in a row on the road.

Turnovers were a key to the outcome. Chicago had 19 of them, converting into 22 Atlanta points. Conversely, the Hawks had eight turnovers, leading to two points for the Bulls.

"The guys are working. They tried to stay with them early on, but our turnovers got us," said Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro. "They had too many offensive rebounds in the first half and then they jumped on us early in the third quarter, and we were playing catch-up."

Crawford, who finished 10-of-16 from the floor, had 12 of his points during the pivotal second quarter. The Hawks outscored the Bulls in that period, 34-21, to grab a 56-42 edge at the half.

A dunk from Taj Gibson had the Bulls within 26-23 less than two minutes into the second quarter, but Atlanta went in a big run later in the stanza. Al Horford's jumper capped a 10-0 flurry for a 47-31 difference with three minutes remaining in the half.

Atlanta continued to pull away in the third. Smith's alley-oop jam off a feed from Johnson made it 76-46 with 3:35 to go, and it was 87-57 moving to the fourth. The lead escalated to as high as 36 in the final quarter.

Chicago has lost four straight at Philips Arena...The Bulls host Golden State on Friday for the opener of a six-game homestand. Atlanta's next game is the same night at Toronto...Chicago fell to 2-10 on the road this season...The Bulls shot 14-of-40 from the field over the final 24 minutes, compared to 23- of-39 for Atlanta...Hawks forward Joe Smith suffered a dislocated left thumb early in the fourth quarter and didn't return...Crawford and Evans each went 4-of-6 from beyond the arc...Chicago finished 36.4 percent from the field.

NBA Power Rankings, Week 6: Where The Gods Are Still Laker Fans

SB Nation's NBA bloggers vote to determine this week's power rankings. The results: Once again, the Lakers are No. 1. Isn't it nice to see an upstart, underdog team finally getting some love? Elsewhere: The Bulls aren't good. Neither are the Pacers

When you got it, you got it, and right now the Lakers got it. Across the body shots, while fading away, and behind the three-point line aren't suppose to drop in. But for the Lakers, everything is falling.

Speaking of falling, Chicago takes the biggest cliff dive after a horrific week capped off by a loss to the Nets at home.

See where everyone else falls in line.

Zach Randolph had a season-best 32 points, pulled down 14 rebounds and had four of Memphis' 12 steals. O.J. Mayo contributed 28 points, while Rudy Gay scored 21 for the victors. Conley scored 12, while Marc Gasol chipped in 11 points and eight boards.

James also had 13 rebounds and six assists, but was just 6-of-19 from the field after halftime. Mo Williams had 20 points for the Cavaliers, who had a four-game winning streak broken.

Mayo's three-pointer gave Memphis a 109-107 edge with 19.1 seconds left in the extra session, but James countered with a pair of free throws with 14.9 to go. Memphis then used a pick-and-roll to get Conley free and he drove past Shaquille O'Neal for the go-ahead layup.

James hit the front of the rim on a long three-point try at the buzzer.

(Sports Network) - Devin Harris scored 17 points and his go-ahead bucket with 14.9 seconds left in regulation helped New Jersey pull out a 103-101 decision over the struggling Bulls.

Brook Lopez ended with 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Chris Douglas-Roberts tallied 20 for the Nets, who have won two of three since losing an NBA-record 18 straight to start the season.

Rafer Alston added 15 points, including the game-sealing free throws in the waning seconds for New Jersey, which had lost 18 straight on the road dating back to last season.

Derrick Rose paced Chicago with 27 points, 10 assists and seven boards, but it wasn't enough to stop the club from losing its eighth game in nine tries. Luol Deng also went for 27 points with nine boards, while Taj Gibson scored 20 in a losing effort.

The Nets built an 80-70 heading to the fourth but found themselves in a tie game thanks to Chicago's 12-2 quarter-opening run.

Harris broke an 88-all tie with a three at the 4:26 mark. It was still a three-point game before Rose scored five straight, with his three giving Chicago its first lead, 94-93, since the opening frame.

The visitors answered with a 6-0 run, capped by Courtney Lee's circus-shot in transition for a 99-94 lead with under two minutes to go.

Gibson and Deng hit four consecutive free throws for Chicago to pull within one. Harris' three-pointer as the shot clock was winding down was off the mark, and the Bulls regained possession with 27.3 seconds on the clock.

Rose and Harris exchanged similar runners in the lane with the latter giving the Nets a 101-100 lead with 14.9 ticks showing.

John Salmons' straightaway three was short, and Alston made it a three-point game with two free throws with 6.3 seconds remaining. Rather than give up a potential tying three, Harris fouled Rose.

Rose missed the first freebie and intentionally missed the second, and the Nets were able to knock the rebound away to preserve the win.

New Jersey held a slim 26-24 lead after the first, and it was all tied at 54 at halftime thanks to Deng's late three-pointer from the left corner.

Consecutive turnovers early in the third led to layups from Douglas-Roberts, highlighting the Nets' 10-0 run to start the frame.

The Bulls took three of four meetings from New Jersey last season...Lee ended with 12 points for the Nets, who made 24-of-28 from the foul line, compared to the Bulls' subpar 15-of-23 effort...Salmons scored 12 points for the Bulls.

Jarrett Jack added 17 points, eight assists and seven rebounds for the Raptors, who have won 11 straight games versus Minnesota. Hedo Turkoglu had 16 points and eight rebounds. Andrea Bargnani and DeMar DeRozan each had 15 points for Toronto, which has won a season-high three consecutive games.

Kevin Love ended with 18 points and seven rebounds off the bench for the Timberwolves, who haven't beat the Raptors since a 108-97 decision on January 21, 2004. Jonny Flynn chipped in 17 points and eight assists. Ryan Gomes finished with 16 points for Minnesota, which dropped to 3-18 on the season.

Down 84-78 late in the fourth, the Timberwolves ripped off six straight points to tie the game. Love's jumper deadlocked things at 84 with 2:17 to play.

Toronto responded with a 10-2 spurt to claim the victory. Turkoglu got things started with a slam and ended the flurry with a pair of free throws to give the Raptors a 94-86 margin.

Flynn's layup as time expired accounted for the final margin.

Ahead 18-17 late in the first quarter, the Raptors used five consecutive points from Bargnani to take a 23-17 lead. Love's three-point play at the end of the period cut the gap to 23-20.

The Timberwolves ripped off six straight points midway through the second to go in front. Damien Wilkins made a pair of shots from the foul line to give Minnesota a 29-28 edge with about six minutes left.

Toronto responded with a 14-4 run to take a nine-point lead. Jack capped the spurt with a pair of foul shots to make it a 42-33 game with under two minutes to go. The score was 43-35 at the break.

Minnesota got within three early in the third, but the Raptors put together a 7-0 spurt midway through the stanza. Bosh's free throw and jumper made it a 59-48 game with 5 1/2 minutes left.

The Timberwolves got back into the game, thanks to an 11-1 run to end the frame. Ramon Sessions' long deuce cut the gap to 64-63 heading to the fourth.

The final period was a back-and-forth battle that came down to the final minutes.

The Raptors shot 32.1 percent from the field, while the Timberwolves made 37.1 percent of their shots...Toronto has won 13 of the last 17 meetings with Minnesota. The Raptors have also won the last six as the host in this series...The Timberwolves head back home Wednesday to take on the Hornets, while the Raptors travel to Milwaukee to play the Bucks on Wednesday.

Reasonable people can debate whether Greg Oden is injury-prone or just remarkably unlucky. His Trailblazers teammates? Just unlucky.

The Blazers have already lost small forwards Nicholas Batum and Travis Outlaw for nearly the entire season with injuries. Now, they might lose ace shooting guard Rudy Fernandez for a while, because Fernandez is apparently having surgery to fix some pain he's had in his right foot.

Portland Trail Blazers guard/forward Rudy Fernandez will undergo a procedure today to alleviate pain in his right leg, General Manager Kevin Pritchard announced Tuesday.

Fernandez, 24, will undergo a microdiscectomy to relieve pressure from a nerve root in his lower back that is causing pain in his right leg.

Fernandez timetable is still unknown, but that does not sound like your run-of-the-mill NBA procedure. We'll keep you posted when news comes in, but for now, all I can say is that this franchise is snake-bitten. Something always prevents them from getting over the hump into championship contender status.

SB Nation's Andrew Sharp examines the tragic character that is Tim Donaghy, as well as his recent public allegations about NBA officiating. Given some of the reactions from NBA writers and fans, are people missing the point here?

By now, you've probably tired of the whole Tim Donaghy story.

I certainly have.

In the simplest terms, it's difficult to call a white collar criminal the NBA's great white knight. A whistleblower that's also a felon isn't really the most credible source. So it's probably best that we tread lightly on this whole "NBA conspiracy" angle.

But it doesn't mean we can't discuss Donaghy, the person. Because as an individual, he's really quite captivating. A study in human failure, and quite possibly, a failed system (NBA officiating). He's a rare, complex figure; the sort of character typically confined to the pages of a good novel or a Hollywood movie. He's either desperate or defiant, depending on your perspective, but all things considered, the truth is that he's probably a little bit of both.

It reminds me of Mark Whitacre. Who's that, you ask? He's the man who was at the center of a massive FBI investigation more than a decade ago. He turned FBI informant in the early '90s, and helped expose a massive price-fixing conspiracy at one of the nation's largest agriculture corporations, Archer Daniels Midland. He also was the chief force behind an embezzlement scheme that netted him a reported $9 million. At the same time he was playing hero, Whitacre was quietly stealing millions of dollars.

Sometimes, conspiracies can be complicated.

Immortalized this summer in Steven Soderbergh's The Informant!, Whitacre was also the center of a non-fiction book by the same name. It was one of the better works of non-fiction this decade, and dealt with this man in depth. What makes someone so obviously crooked one day decide to stand up and expose what's wrong with corporate America? When you think about it, Whitacre's shadowy operations were, themselves, what's wrong with corporate America.

And yet, does that make his claims, or the information he provided to the FBI, any less valid? Archer Daniels Midland was still forced to settle with the U.S. Justice Department for hundreds of millions of dollars, thanks in large part to Whitacre's exposure of price fixing allegations. They were cheating the public; he was cheating them. It's this dichotomy that the book investigates, as well as some of Whitacre's personal problems that contributed to his conflicted, bizarre behavior. It's study in frayed and altogether decayed corporate morals, but more than that, it's a complicated character study.

And that's what Tim Donaghy deserves.

Instead, we're spending our time cross-examining him on claims in a book that, make no mistake, was designed solely to make money. Donaghy needs money, he's got nothing to lose, and he's got ZERO credibility with anyone. What made anyone think we could trust this guy in the first place? It's not matter of whether he's lying, but how much?

Nevertheless, ESPN's True Hoop unveils an extensive investigation this morning debunking Donaghy's claims:

Donaghy declares Charles Barkley, as a player, stalked into the referees' locker room looking for Donaghy after an on-court dispute between the two in a Clippers vs. Rockets game.

Barkley, says Donaghy, then dumped a massive bucket of Gatorade and ice over the referee.

In a text message to ESPN's Mark Schwarz, Barkley insists he has no recollection of any such thing, yet Donaghy was as indignant as ever.

"The two refs in the locker room know it happened. I know it happened. For Charles Barkley to lie like that is troublesome to me. Maybe we both need to sit down and take a lie detector test, and maybe the loser needs to give $500,000 to charity. And I'd like to see what his response would be to that."

WHO CARES? Are we really wasting our time impugning the credibility of someone that bet on NBA games every day for multiples of years? Must NBA people be that insecure?

Take it from someone who's been betting on sports since 16 years old: we are NOT stable individuals, and the people that do it seriously, like as a lifestyle, are certifiably insane. There was a bookie I knew in college who doubled as cab driver. He'd lived in Southern California for years before a crack addiction and a $10,000 debt forced him to flee San Diego and head to New England. Once there, he started driving cabs and taking informal wagers, eventually making it into a business. Does that sound like someone tethered to a vigorous standard of honesty?

But wait, let's continue:

Donaghy asserts there was easy money to be made counting on Bavetta to use his whistle to help a team that is trailing. For a gambler, this strategy would be dicey in games expected to be close.

[...]

Donaghy says he felt confident that big underdogs would beat the spread if Bavetta was one of the three referees.

It's not hard to find examples when Donaghy was wrong. Bavetta has refereed plenty of blowouts. In January 2004, for instance, the Kings were seven-point favorites over the Suns, but won by 20. The next month, the Rockets were nine-point favorites over the Hawks, and won by 21. In January 2005, the Suns were favored by eight and won by 18. That same year, the Bulls won a Bavetta game by 40 when they were favored by nine, and the Pistons laid a 25-point beating on the Bobcats when they were favored to win by seven. A few months later, the Pistons, favored by seven, beat the Pacers by 25.

So one of Tim Donaghy's gambling "rules" was proven ineffective? That's what we learn? Again, take it from someone that bets on sports far too often: the "rules" that gamblers use to pick games are about as reliable as using a sun dial to tell time. It's an inexact science, and any habitual gambler would admit as much.

Like, in my head, it makes sense to always bet on a college team where the star player has multiple kids. Why? Because he's got something play for! But that doesn't make it a viable strategy... And if Tim Donaghy put forth his "rules" as some evidence said to reveal NBA biases, why even waste time responding? Especially when the real story is so much more interesting.

The problem, of course, is that this type of thing is sort of beyond most sportswriters' purview. Especially NBA writers, who spend at least 60% of their time defending the sport's integrity to fellow sportswriters that are skeptical. So it's no surprise that plenty of talented, reasonable people have jumped at the opportunity to just say, "THIS GUY'S FULL OF SH--." Because he's definitely lying. But he's also probing at the truth, if that makes sense. Again, desperate and defiant in equal measure.

We could vilify him for the desperate attempts at selling a book with salacious accusations--and trying to salvage some semblance of financial security--but where does that really get us? If Donaghy's so wrong about some of his accusations, does that mean we're to pretend that the corporate integrity of the NBA isn't frayed? No way.

Because like Whitacre, Donaghy himself proves what's wrong with the system in the first place. It's like if there were a drug addict appointed to the Supreme Court, and then after he'd been disbarred and disgraced, we focused on debunking his allegations rather than, you know, we had a drug dealer on the Supreme Court. A degenerate gambler and known associate of the Gambino mob was an NBA Official for many years, and we know this.

For some perspective, last week the former head of the Gambino family had his fourth mistrial in a racketeering case being prosecuted by the Federal Government. Do you know how unbelievably corrupt you have to be to successfully deadlock four juries? I'm not saying that's what happened, but... If you were to intimidate four juries, you would have to be unbelievably corrupt.

Junior Gotti, InPlaceNews, via Associated Press

Now, a gambling habit may not make Donaghy into some mobster, but still. These are the people he was involved with, and as an NBA official, he was intimately involved with some of the most integral parts of the game. That's the story here.

Sure, in search of salvation, and without much burden of proof, he's making a bunch of allegations about the league's officiating. What's remarkable, though, is how easily some of us will dismiss his allegations in the interest of protecting the game. Especially since paying attention to Donaghy could teach us why we need to fix the game.

What he's done is probe at all the stereotypes and conspiracy theories that already exist about the NBA, all in the name of selling a book. He concocted some potentially false anecdotes to help prove himself, but that's not the point. Over at Denver Stiffs, there's an excellent post examining some of Donaghy's claims, and it ultimately concludes with this: "I'm buying about half of what Donaghy is saying...but already knew/assumed most of that stuff about NBA refereeing in the first place." The greatest lesson in all of this is that for NBA fans, none of this stuff is new.

And some of it's true. Anyone that watched the 2006 Finals (or any number of other embarrassing officiating displays) knows that there's something wrong with the NBA officiating process. Allowing Donaghy's trangressions to overshadow that fact would be like discarding the price fixing allegations against Archer Daniels Midland. Just because one crime was committed doesn't mean we should ignore others.

So, if we're going to discuss Tim Donaghy, it should be as one of the more fascinating, tragic figures in recent sports history. He's a study in contradictions, desperation, and in some perverse way, defiance of the NBA's archaic system of officiating. It's the type of thing that deserves its own non-fiction book, or a major motion picture. Truly, you couldn't make this stuff up.

But if we're going to discuss Tim Donaghy's allegations, we can't just pull the wool over our eyes and pretend that none of it's true just because it's coming from him. He may not be the one that proves it, but he's absolutely probing at some truth. Tim Donaghy acted like a weak, pathetic fool, and he's been rightfully disgraced.

But if we let that overshadow the bigger problems facing the NBA, we're the ones that look pathetic and foolish.

RELATED:

"Are NBA Games Fixed?" SB Nation's Denver Stiffs

Carlos Boozer scored 27 points and played some excellent defense on the Spurs' last possession to deny them the go-ahead bucket, as Utah used a third-quarter surge to beat San Antonio for the third time this season, 104-101.

Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Carlos Boozer scored 27 points and played some excellent defense on the Spurs' last possession to deny them the go-ahead bucket, as Utah used a third-quarter surge to beat San Antonio for the third time this season, 104-101, at EnergySolutions Arena.

Boozer added seven boards and five assists for the Jazz, who have won five of six. Boozer also denied San Antonio's Matt Bonner a clean look at the basket with 1.5 seconds left. Deron Williams added 17 points and 11 assists, while Ronnie Brewer had 17 points and 10 boards in the win.

"It's something we haven't done in awhile," Brewer said of the three wins against San Antonio this season. "Against a team who has had so much success in the NBA, it's a good feeling for us."

Mehmet Okur contributed 14 points and nine boards for Utah, which outscored the Spurs, 37-19, in the third quarter.

Bonner led San Antonio with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-14 shooting, but the Spurs have lost three straight after a five-game win streak. Tim Duncan chipped in with 23 points and 11 boards, while Tony Parker had 22 points in defeat.

"Great game but tough loss for us," said Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich. "But great game for the fans to watch for sure. We really had a bad third quarter, and I was proud of the way we dug out of it because we really got creamed in that quarter badly. I thought the guys did a really great job of hanging in there and getting back in the game and giving themselves a chance to win."

The Jazz, trailing by eight at halftime, caught fire in the third to storm in front.

The Spurs held a 61-51 lead after an Antonio McDyess basket with just under 10 minutes left, and Utah went on a 28-7 surge to take an 11-point lead.

Okur's three got the rally going, and Boozer and Williams each hit a basket to get the hosts to within 62-58. After a Richard Jefferson layup, Williams hit a six-foot shot, and Brewer converted a three-point play for a 64-63 game.

Parker's jumper put the Spurs back in front by three, but Boozer responded with two free throws and a 16-foot shot to give the Jazz their first lead of the quarter, 67-66.

The Jazz then scored 12 of the game's next 14 points, and Okur ended the surge the same way he started it -- with a three-pointer providing a 79-68 margin with 3:46 on the clock.

"We started getting up, started guarding them a little bit more, and (we) went and did exactly what (we) wanted to do the whole time in the first half, it appeared to me," said Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan. "I thought we got up and challenged them just a little bit more in the way we (made) steals, and (we) kind of got our momentum going and made some shots. It's amazing how you build on it."

Utah led, 86-76, after three quarters. The Spurs trailed, 92-80, with nine minutes left in the game but embarked on a 13-0 run to take the lead.

Bonner had eight points on the stretch, and his basket with 5:33 left gave San Antonio a 93-92 lead. Another Bonner three gave the Spurs a 96-94 advantage, but the Jazz scored six of the next seven points, with Boozer's layup providing a 100-97 Jazz lead with two minutes to go.

A Duncan jumper with a minute left brought San Antonio to within one, and he hit two free throws with 28.2 seconds left for a 101-100 advantage. Williams came back down the court and drained a jumper with 22.1 seconds left to again put Utah in front.

Parker missed a wide-open baseline jumper on the other end, but Boozer missed a pair of free throws with 10.6 seconds left with a chance to make it a three- point game.

Bonner attempted a running jumper over Boozer with 1.9 seconds on the clock, but the ball rimmed out to Okur, who was fouled and made two free throws for a 104-101 game. Jefferson's desperation heave missed to end the game.

"The last play obviously wasn't to isolate me at half court," Bonner said. "They did a good job on defense; took away our first and second options, and I just tried to make a play. When (the shot) left my hand, it felt good. It looked like it was down and then popped out. Tough miss."

Duncan had 13 points in the first quarter, and the Spurs held a 31-24 lead heading into the second quarter.

San Antonio scored the first eight points of the second to go in front by 15, and George Hill's three with 3:45 left in the first half kept the visitors ahead, 51-37.

Utah, though, closed on a 12-6 run to get to within 57-49 at halftime.

Wesley Matthews added 11 points for the Jazz, while C.J. Miles had 10 in the win...The home team has won 13 of the last 15 in the series between the teams...Utah used only eight players in the game, with three players playing at least 42 minutes. No San Antonio player had over 36 minutes...The Jazz shot 78.9 percent (15-for-19) in the third quarter and 53.2 percent overall...The Spurs shot 48.6 percent in the contest...Bonner's previous career high was 25...The Jazz clinched their first season-series win against San Antonio since the 1997-98 campaign.

Chauncey Billups went a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line in a 31-point night, and the Denver Nuggets spoiled Allen Iverson's return in a Philadelphia uniform with a 93-83 win, handing the reeling 76ers their 10th straight loss.

Chauncey Billups went a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line in a 31-point night, and the Denver Nuggets spoiled Allen Iverson's return in a Philadelphia uniform with a 93-83 win, handing the reeling 76ers their 10th straight loss.

Billups added eight rebounds and eight assists for the Nuggets, who at one time employed Iverson for parts of three seasons after he was traded from the Sixers in the 2006-07 campaign. Carmelo Anthony added 14 points for Denver, which has won four straight and eight of nine.

"Chauncey kind of took over when we needed him to," said Nuggets head coach George Karl. "That's the type of player he is. He has a feel for the game and gets done what needs to be done."

Iverson, who received a standing ovation as the starting lineups were announced, scored 11 points, had six assists and grabbed five rebounds in his return to his original team. The diminutive guard signed with the team last week after a brief retirement from the game following his release from the Memphis Grizzlies.

"Just the fans. It meant so much," Iverson said when asked about his return. "It's like a marriage, both sides want to feel wanted, and obviously I have a connection with these people."

The Georgetown product spent 10-plus seasons with Philadelphia to begin his career, leading the team to the 2000-01 NBA Finals and winning the MVP award in the same year. He is the franchise's all-time leading per-game scorer and was starting in lieu of Lou Williams' jaw injury, which will sideline him for an extended period of time.

"It was bittersweet," Iverson said of the game. "I wanted the win so badly whether I played well or not. My heart said yes, but my body said no. My legs were heavy. My arms were heavy. It was tough. I didn't know if I would play today, but I gave it everything."

The Sixers, who came into the game with the second-lowest home attendance in the league at 11,965 people per game, sold out the arena with 20,664 people on Monday.

Andre Iguodala led the 76ers with 31 points, but the team fell to 5-16 on the season, second-worst in the East. Thaddeus Young added 21 points, while Elton Brand had 10 and 13 rebounds in defeat.

Denver trailed by two to start the fourth but scored the first 14 points of the quarter to surge in front.

Chris AndersEn's dunk to begin the frame quickly tied the contest, and Billups and J.R. Smith each hit a three -- with Smith's shot giving the visitors a 77-65 lead with 8 1/2 minutes to play.

The Sixers didn't cut their deficit to single-digits again until a Samuel Dalembert slam with 5 1/2 minutes left made it 82-73.

Billups later answered with a layup, and after Young's layup, Billups drained a three-pointer to make it a 12-point game at 89-77 with just over three minutes left.

Philadelphia didn't threaten down the stretch.

The Sixers won the opening tip and quickly passed the ball to Iverson, and the crowd rose to its feet in applause for the former franchise star. Iverson went in for the layup, but the ball caromed off the rim.

Iverson's first points came on a putback jumper from four feet away with seven minutes left in the opening quarter, and he had four total points in the first period. Iguodala had 14 points to lead Philadelphia, as the 76ers closed the quarter on a 11-5 run to take a 26-20 advantage into the second.

The Sixers went up by 10, 32-22, early in the second quarter, but the Nuggets cut their deficit to 44-41 at halftime. Iverson had only two points in the stanza on a jump shot in the final minute.

Philadelphia went back in front by nine early in the third, 56-47, after a nifty pass from Iverson to Dalembert, who had an emphatic slam with 7 1/2 minutes remaining.

Denver answered with eight straight points to make it a one-point game on Billups' three-pointer, but Iverson and Iguodala combined for the next six points -- all free throws -- to put Philadelphia back up by seven.

The 76ers carried a slight 65-63 lead heading into the fourth.

The Sixers are on their longest losing streak since dropping 12 in a row from November 25 - December 20, 2006 -- not much after they originally traded Iverson...The Nuggets swept last season's series, 2-0...Iguodala hit a shot from nearly the opposing baseline at the buzzer in the first quarter, but the period had ended, nullifying the basket...Iverson, who shot 4-of-11 from the field in over 37 minutes of court time, had played only one game in Philadelphia since being traded -- with the Nuggets...Dalembert had eight points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

Not only is Allen Iverson returning to the place where his NBA career started, he's also expected to return to a spot he always felt he deserved: the starting lineup.

The Philadelphia Inquirer's Kate Fagen is reporting that Iverson is expected to start in his Sixers debut Monday against the Denver Nuggets, one of his former teams. Fagen quotes Sixers head coach Eddie Jordan saying he "anticipates" starting Iverson in the backcourt, thanks in large part to the injuries to Louis Williams and Jrue Holiday. However, this could become a permanent thing based on Jordan's comments about Sunday's practice.

"A lot of energy," Jordan said of the practice. "A lot of veteran presence on the floor. A lot of hop to everybody’s step. There was really great energy and anticipation and it was better than I expected … because of his presence, because of his movement on the floor. What he does on the ball, off the ball, how he talks … because of all the things the average person doesn’t see."

Jordan also said Iverson's presence has the potential to make the rest of the team better because "the best players help their teammates and make their teammates better." However, Liberty Ballers, SB Nation's Philadelphia 76ers blog, comes up with a sobering stat. In the last four years, Iverson's teams (Sixers, Nuggets, Pistons, Grizzlies) are a combined 107-109 when he plays and 135-108 when he doesn't.

On the other hand, the 76ers are 5-15 and have lost nine in a row. They're in desperate need of some kind of spark, and Iverson might be the guy to provide it.
