John Tavares scores his first career game winning goal against the Pittsburgh Penguins to give the Islanders a 3-2 win Friday night. At the 13 minute mark in the third period, Tavares knocked home the Matt Moulson rebound to give the Islanders the 3-2 lead. Josh Bailey and Sean Bergenheim scored the other two goals for the Islanders while Dwayne Roloson made 19 saves in the win.

The Penguins were badly outshot in the contest, 37-21, and outshot in the third period 18-5. Penguins goals were scored by Evgeni Malkin and Matt Cooke. Brent Johnson took the loss for the Penguins.

The Islanders have certainly improved from last season and can only get better as the season goes on. They will be a team to reckon with as the season continues.

Martin Brodeur passed Patrick Roy in all-time minutes played during Friday's win over the Boston Bruins.

Martin Brodeur broke the NHL all-time minutes played record during the second period of the Devils game against the Bruins on Friday. The record was previously held by Patrick Roy and now stands at 60,275. The capacity crowd in Boston gave Brodeur a standing ovation after the record was announced during a stoppage in play.

As for the game, Brodeur added to his all-time wins record with a 2-1 shootout victory. Zach Parise scored the lone goal in regulation for the Bruins and he and Jamie Langenbrunner scored the shootout goals. Blake Wheeler tied the game for the Bruins at the twelve second mark in the third period. Brodeur made 32 saves in the win while Tuukka Rask made 37 saves in the loss.

Our Devils blog, In Lou We Trust had this to say about Brodeur's performance today:

Today, Martin Brodeur broke the all-time NHL record for career minutes played in the second period. That wasn't all. He wasn't just big in Boston, he was massive. Long shots, point-blank shots, shots from the slot, up high, down low, on the ground, while standing - Brodeur made every stop except for one. A shot right on Brodeur's flank right in front of the crease courtesy of Blake Wheeler. Nevertheless, Martin Brodeur prevented this one from becoming a Boston rout in the third period and for that alone, he should be praised. The Devils get nothing from today's game if it wasn't for Brodeur bringing his "A" game.

Evgeni Nabokov and the San Jose Sharks look to slow down the Chicago Blackhawks tonight as 28 teams face off tonight in the NHL.

The top two teams in the NHL will face off tonight in San Jose, as the Chicago Blackhawks look to take down the Sharks in a big game for both teams. The NHL's best home team will look slow down the surging Blackhawks, who are riding an NHL-leading seven-game win streak. The Hawks are currently No. 1 in our Power Rankings, and a win tonight will go a long towards cementing Chicago as the most impressive team in the NHL.

The Sharks and Hawks haven't played a game that hasn't been massively entertaining in a long time. I don't believe in anything such as "statement games", especially this early in the year. What I do know is that all of us will be beaming during Thanksgiving if the Hawks go into the den of the league's current point-leader and beat them for the second time in two weeks. Should that happen, we can drop the "arguably" from the label the Hawks have as "arguably the league's best team right now." Make it happen.

We're just one game shy of a "Super Wednesday" in the NHL, as 28 teams will square off tonight. While the big game won't start until 10:30 p.m. on the East coast, here is the full rundown of games to keep you satisfied until then.

Our first decent shake up of the season in the NHL rankings, as the Chicago Blackhawks are riding a seven-game winning streak all the way to the No. 1 spot in our Top Ten rankings. The New Jersey Devils, who were threatening the San Jose Sharks for the top spot last week, had a down week and have fallen back to No. 6.

Surprise of the week: The Detroit Red Wings pop back into the Top Ten rankings, despite only winning one of their past four games.

PLEASE READ: Western Conference rankings are determined by votes from Western Conference bloggers, Eastern Conference bloggers for Eastern rankings. The Top 10 Power Rankings are determined by a separate vote of Western and Eastern Conference bloggers.

Chicago Blackhawks

15-5-2

Seven straight wins have propelled Chicago to the top led by the two Patricks, Kane and Sharp.

2

1

San Jose Sharks

16-5-4

Still unbeaten in regulation at home, and have a NHL-best +23 goal differential.

Washington Capitals

13-5-6

Capitals fans are reeling after four losses in five games, although they did get points in two of those. Hey, it's the important things.

Pittsburgh Penguins

16-8-0

Fours wins in five games is a good sign for an injured team. As guys keep returning - Letang, Goligoski, Kunitz, Kennedy, McKee - it can only get better

Calgary Flames

13-6-3

A great road record (7-1-3) has helped Calgary overcome shaky play on home ice (6-5-0).

2

New Jersey Devils

14-6-1

After an eight-game winning streak, the Devils have slowed a bit with three road losses.

12-8-1

Voters still feeling good about Philly, despite a three-game losing streak.

12-6-2

One of the strongest defensive teams in the NHL has struggled lately, allowing 13 goals in the past three games (all losses).

14-7-3

The incredible goaltending to start the season has caught up with the Avs a bit, who are 4-5-1 in the past ten games and are now 18th in the NHL in goals allowed.

Detroit Red Wings

11-7-4

1-2-1 in the past week and are suddenly having some struggles scoring.

Wild Trade Benoit Pouliot to Montreal For Guillaume Latendresse

The Minnesota Wild and Montreal Canadiens traded two under achieving players today with the swap of Benoit Pouliot and Guillaume Latendresse.

A minor trade went down in the NHL today with the swap of Benoit Pouliot to Montreal for Guillaume Latendresse. Pouliot has two goals and two assists on the season while Latendresse has two goals and one assist. Pouliot was a first round pick for the Minnesota Wild back in the 2005 draft and has scored nine goals and nine assists in 65 games for the Wild. Latendresse was a second round pick in that same draft and has 85 career points in 232 games. Our Canadiens blog, Habs Eyes on the Prize, had this to say about Latendresse:

In his time in Montreal, Latendresse aquitted himself decently under pressure, having been one of the few teenagers in Canadiens history to join the club, nevermind scoring 16 goals. What is bothersome now, looking back, is that he is something of a posterboy for regressive Habs draft picks. There are too many to list, but it's oddly coincidental that on the day that Guillaume is shuffled off to Minny, Sergei Kostitsyn, another Habs pick that has regressed in three years is recalled.

While this trade will not significantly effect the playoff race, it gives some struggling players a change of scenery.

John Tavares makes his first trip to Toronto when the Islanders face off against the Maple Leafs. This and nine other games are on the slate tonight for hockey's version of Feast Week.

It's a busy Monday night in the NHL, as 20 teams are in action. The spotlight game of the night is the New York Islanders vs. the Toronto Maple Leafs; it's the first game for Islander John Tavares in Toronto. Tavares originally hails from Toronto and the media there is jumping on his every word. He had this to say about playing in Toronto for the first time:

"I grew up there with the Leafs and was always a Leafs fan and it's where I learned to play the game and love the game and develop my skills. So it should be a lot of fun.

"A lot of people are coming to watch, so I'm going to enjoy it. But I'll keep the importance of the game on my mind and treat it like any other game."

While most of the eyes in the hockey world are going to be on Toronto tonight, here are the rest of the games and where you can join the conversation:

Over the next two weeks, SB Nation will go team by team in the NHL and give our predictions on who has the best shot at representing their country in the 2010 Winter Olympics. Each day we'll feature three teams whose respective websites will give their thoughts on who is on their way to Vancouver, and who will be staying behind.

Atlanta Thrashers - Bird Watcher's Anonymous

Pack Your Bags

Ilya Kovalchuk is a first line player for the Russian Team. The only thing keeping him from Vancouver would be an injury. He won gold at the most recent World Championships and would certainly love to repeat that performance with fellow countrymen Ovechkin and Malkin.

Christoph Schubert will attend given the paucity of German born NHL players. To be honest I don't know anything about German players playing in Europe, but looking at their list of Olympic candidates, I would expect him to be in their top four defenseman.

The Falconer goes on to say that while Maxim Afinogenov has had a great start to the season, he still has a long way to go before getting a chance with Team Russia.

Anaheim Ducks - Anaheim Calling

Pack Your Bags

Ryan Getzlaf: The Regina-bred centerman missed Orientation Camp after offseason hernia surgery, but he has looked tip-top opening the year in Anaheim. Canada will need his directly proportional size and skill up the middle.

Scott Niedermayer: Already packed.

Boston Bruins - Stanley Cup of Chowder

Pack Your Bags

Zdeno Chara, Slovakia
Chara is a lock to be on Slovakia's Olympic roster. This will be the second time that the towering defenseman has been on the Slovakian Olympic team, having made the roster in 2006.

Tim Thomas, United States

Thomas was one of 3 goaltenders to be invited to Team USA's Olympic orientation camp this summer. He will be competing with Buffalo's Ryan Miller and LA's Jonathan Quick. Right now, Ryan Miller looks to be the front-runner for the starting job, but Thomas certainly has a shot to be the #1 netminder for Team U.S. in Vancouver. More than likely both Thomas and Miller will see some ice time during the tournament. This would be Thomas' first Olympic appearance and according to the goalie a life-long dream come true.
